Born in a small Brazilian village, primitive painter Sebastião Januário worked as a farm hand until the age of sixteen, when he moved to Rio de Janeiro and joined the Air Force, determined to save money for painting. Here, he met a colonel who became his patron and funded him to study art in Paris. Fellow painters Di Cavalcanti and Antonio Bandeira also helped promote Januário in Brazil. He is best known for his stylized, primary-colored scenes of native life, which recall stained glass windows.
